Mezzanine?

Hi all, Dave here.  Thought I’d drop a couple of tidbits of information your way!

First, our ripped DVD “library” application has a new name thanks to the voting of IndyHall members and friends.  The new name is… wait for it…. “Mezzanine.”  I apologize in advance if you don’t like it.

Secondly, I thought I’d show you some of the UI work we’re doing for Mezzanine.  The UI will be partially 3D accelerated and just look really pretty on your Mac.  We just started on the UI today - check out the movie below and look at what we’ve accomplished in one day!

(Note: imagine the red boxes are DVD box covers.)

Hope you enjoy, and leave comments if you have any!

Open Source

We’re sharing code! Bits and pieces of the IndyHall Labs projects that we think would be useful as open source projects in and of themselves, we’re posting to GitHub.

Check out the list of projects! We’re starting small, but will be growing quickly!

Grid? No Grid?

,

The IndyHall Labs dev team is growing and now that the engine is working well, they’re putting some focus on the UI. There’s an argument about using a grid (like Delicious Library does), or something better. Listen in on the debate, and then chime in with your own input!

Barcodes make the Jasons go CrazyCrazy

Jason Allum and Jason Tremblay brainstorm over some issues with their iSight barcode reader.

“It looks really smart, right?”

Just one week of ideas on the new labs’ whiteboards. Holy moly.

Interface, In Your Face: Early Sketches of LibaryAppX

,

Not many things are more exciting than waking up to iPhone camera shots of a paper napkin sketch!

Paper sketches remain one of the best wireframing/UI design techniques, despite their apparent roughness. Some of the most popular apps that we’ve come to love and use daily have interfaces that came from great paper sketches, including Twitter, Vimeo, Flickr (Places), and many others.

So with that, I’m excited to share with you the FIRST paper sketch of the still unnamed movie library app being produced at IndyHall Labs.

as produced by Dave Martoarana, Jason Allum, and Jason Tremblay

IndyHall Labs, Episode 2: If you think about the app like a broadway show

This is the kind of conversation I walk into at 10pm on a Friday night. Watch to see what our mad scientists are cooking up now!

IndyHall Labs. Take One. Action.

, , , , , , ,

We’ve been buzzing around some new ideas here at IndyHall. The lead developer on RipIt, Jason Allum, and I have been talking about how to take the team building exercise that produced RipIt and use that kind of organic collaboration to work towards some new goals.

This week, Jason and Dave Martorana (that’s right, senior MultiFirefox himself) have begun on a new project, a now unnamed companion to Ripit. Watch them and listen as the explain what they’re up to, and why:

This model isn’t anything secretive. The reality is, we’re building it as we go. We’ve got some exciting ideas about how we’d like things to play out, though, and hope you join us along for the ride.

Starting today, we’re going to post daily videos, diaries, and screenshots of the project in progress as Dave assembles the team and works towards the finish line!

Our simplest hope is that this process is exciting for everyone: the team and the “fans” of the project, to encourage more amazing collaborative productions to join the ranks of iSepta, RipIt, and the Two Guys On Beer video podcast.

Remember that badass launch party we had last month? We’d love to celebrate like that EVERY month.

Think Y-Combinator, for indies. And fast. Way fast. That’s how we roll over here at IndyHall. Are you along for the ride?
